Our History
Architectural Traditions was founded 16 years ago by nationally recognized "Master Builder" Mark Butler. At that time, Mark specialized in building custom homes that were true to Southwestern architectural traditions. To create these architecturally significant estates and achieve an "authentic" design, Mark used building materials not readily available from building material suppliers.

As Mark's homes gained local and national renown, there was great interest in the materials he used, specifically for the exterior doors, windows, interior doors and hardware. Top custom builders from across the country called to ask where they could purchase these materials. This led to the formation of Southwest Door Company. As Southwest Door's popularity grew, the product offering also grew.
To more precisely reflect the widening scope of Mark's mission, Southwest Door became Architectural Traditions, a company still rooted in and proud of its Southwestern heritage, but dedicated to providing product that is true to each regional architectural style for which its product is chosen.

Today, Architectural Traditions is one of the largest custom millwork and hardware manufacturers in the country. It is the only company of its kind that allows the builder, architect, designer and/or homeowner complete control, ensuring that the windows, doors and hardware are manufactured with a consistent look and quality that only a single-source supplier can offer.

Unmatched Quality
Architectural Traditions is one of the largest custom millwork and hardware manufacturers in the country. Its product has been used coast to coast and in foreign countries on a wide selection of architectural styles, ranging from Southwestern adobes to Mediterranean villas to Tudor estates to Craftsman-style homes. What these structures have in common is a "crafted" Old World feel that captures the emerging architectural trend of utilizing natural materials such as stone, hewed beams, plaster walls and wood siding. Regardless of the actual style, an Architectural Traditions home guarantees timeless, enduring architectural styling.

Architectural Traditions is the only company of its kind that allows the builder, architect, designer and/or homeowner complete control, ensuring the windows, doors and hardware are manufactured with a consistent look and quality that only a single-source supplier can offer. Architectural Traditions' lumber is purchased directly from some of the largest mills in the country and processed in-house. The dry climate of the southwestern desert is ideal for a millwork operation. The doors, windowframes and sashes are pulled from the same lumber source to ensure that the product for a job has a consistent look. So whether it's a small cabin in the woods or a palatial estate, Architectural Traditions has the resources and capabilities to provide the products you need and desire.
A Strong First Impression

From the weatherbeaten entrance of a barn in the American West to the massive gates of an opulent Chinese palace, doors define a structure and speak volumes about the people who live and work behind them. Your door is the gateway to your home: it sets the tone for both the exterior and the interior of your space, and the door is the last physical impression people take with them when they leave.

At Architectural Traditions, we help you create a quality crafted door that makes a statement as stylish and unique as you are. The pride we take in our doors is the foundation of our company's reputation in this industry. We're known for our commitment to handcrafted quality and for our meticulous attention to detail.

Our doors are manufactured from the finest woods available, including Incense Cedar, Knotty & Select Alder, Mahogany, Walnut, Spanish Oak and Mesquite. You can order the doors unfinished in any of the woods, or let us apply our furniture-quality Rubbed-Oil finish to your door.

Windows manufactured to last

Architectural Traditions' founder Mark Butler understands the difference that unique, crafted windows can make to a house. It's one of the reasons he started his own company - so that he could create a distinctive line of solid-wood windows, designed to complement most styles of architecture and engineered to withstand the harshest environments. In an era when many window companies are trying to cut costs by using less wood and substituting synthetic materials, Architectural Traditions has chosen a different path. Our all-wood window has a crafted, Old-World look, feel, and operation, and it's engineered using two of the most dimensionally stable natural woods available: Mahogany and Incense Cedar.

Mahogany has been used for centuries to produce some of the finest furniture and millwork in the world. In the aerospace industry, it's known as "Pattern Grade" Mahogany, because of its tremendous stability - which is why it's the species of wood used for making patterns and templates from which metal parts are formed. Incense Cedar, another wood known for its stability and resistance to decay, has long been used by builders in harsh environments like the desert, where temperature and humidity can vary dramatically in short periods of time. Incense Cedar stands up to these extremes.

From a design point of view, Architectural Traditions offers a range of window options as limitless as your vision. Choose from our series of traditional casements, double-hungs, sliders, geometrics, or our proprietary Homestead series. We also offer French doors that can match your windows. See the Door section for details.
Based on the window type you select, you can choose one of several different screen options, from traditional aluminum-framed to hinged wood-framed screens, and even a disappearing pull-down screen that, when in the "up" position, allows for a totally unobstructed view.

We offer a selection of glass types, from our standard clear dual-glazed annealed to the high-energy-performing Low-E glass. Most of the hardware trim we offer is produced in our in-house foundry, allowing us to control the quality and provide you with several design and finish options. In addition, we can help you select the texture that will create an authentic design look, whether it's Rustic Country, or Old-World, and bring to your home the same kind of crafted quality that hewn timbers or a rock fireplace can provide. We've been perfecting our texturing process for over sixteen years, which is why it's almost impossible for someone in the field to get the same authentic texture that we're able to produce.

The beauty and depth of our fine furniture-quality Rubbed-Oil finish is not typically available from most window manufacturers, and like our textures, it's nearly impossible to achieve in the field. Most finishes applied in the field are done in a matter of minutes; our prefinish process takes us five days to apply.

A final note: each piece that we produce at Architectural Traditions is unique, and looks it. Certain cosmetic details that might be considered defects in ordinary wood products, such as knots and raised grain highlights, are considered enhancements in our products and add considerably to their handcrafted beauty and their desirability
