About Galaxy:
Galaxy is "performance driven", keeping abreast of the latest technology, and incorporating only those components and manufacturing techniques that yield superior performance and end-user benefit.
All of GALAXY'S products are "made to order" to size measurements and option selections provided by the customer or installing contractor.
Our History:
During the mid 1970's, America experienced the hardships of what has been called the "energy crisis", a situation in which the availability of petroleum based heating products was limited due to the control of it's source by foreign interests. The cost for such products escalated severely. In the classic American way, our technical and manufacturing resources were marshalled to offset any disastrous impact from a recurrence of such a serious economic event. By the early 1980's, products had been developed which improved our ability to conserve energy by stemming the loss of valuable heat from buildings on an everyday basis. A major point of heat loss was through windows, which had virtually no insulation value, and simply stopped the entry of wind, vinyl replacement windows rain and snow into a building. The vinyl window industry became the most significant force in achieving our needed goals.
In 1983, GALAXY MFG. COMPANY was formed in Syracuse N.Y. to manufacture a line of energy saving window products for installation in Central New York State, a region which experiences a wide swing of climatic conditions throughout the year, from 90° summers, to the famous sub-zero, 160" plus inches of snow fall most winters. The generic windows sold through distributors were reasonably effective in some regions of the country, but the demands of the weather in the Northeast required much more thermally efficient windows to maximize energy conservation, and keep the long range cost of heating homes affordable.
Insulating Glass Units:
All of our fine styles are equipped with modern hermetically sealed insulating glass units.
We use long lasting sealant to insure that no moisture film forms on the inside surface of the glass.
Non-conducting EDGETECH SUPER SPACER®, the only true "warm edge" spacer in use today, is employed to counter heat losses due to conduction.
PILKINGTON's ENERGY ADVANTAGE™ low emissivity glass reflects solar heat and reduces the passage of harmful ultraviolet light, thus controlling the effects of solar radiation.
To dampen the effects of heat loss due to convection currents within the insulated glass unit, all units equipped with LOW-E glazing are filled with Argon inert gas.
Double strength glass is used in all dual glazed insulated glass units to minimize the potential of stress cracks.
Our insulated glass units are hand assembled to assure a positive hermetic seal.
The insulated glass unit is a critical window component, comprising the majority of the surface area of each and every window unit. It must be made correctly to assure the maximum performance of the total window unit.
Double Hung Units:
GALAXY offers two distinct styles of tilting sash double hung windows:
Enjoying long time popularity, our CLASSIC TRADITIONAL double hung features the standard sloped sill configuration reflecting that style of years past.
Our careful finishing of the miters and joints enhances the classic lines of this unit. Sash frames are fusion welded, and the mainframe is mechanically joined and finished to assure a secure, weather tight unit.
We offer two sill designs in our fully welded WEATHER-WELD double hung units. Our original fully welded design features a unique, internally weeped pocket sill design. The newer version employs a positive draining double stepped sill to combine the advantages of a fully welded unit with the visual expectation of a sloping sill preferred by some consumers.
All three versions of our double hung window meet the criteria of structural testing per AAMA/NWWDA I.S.2-97 Grade H-R45-48 x 72 rating, a superior vinyl window achievement
Two and Three Lite Sliders:
GALAXY's slider style window units are fully welded, and manufactured to the same exacting requirements and manufacturing techniques as our renown double hung units. The THREE LITE units are available in the 1/4-1/2-1/4 and the 1/3-1/3-1/3 configurations.
Our TWO-LITE SLIDER has passed the AAMA/NWWDA I.S.2-97 Grade H-C30 71x60 requirements. These units have been found appropriate for several large commercial installation applications.
Tilt-'n'-Slide Units:
GALAXY offers a distinct slider unit variation that allows the sashes to swing inward for easy cleaning or to maximize egress capability. The TILT-'n'-SLIDE feature is made possible by the incorporation of Preferred Engineering Products, Ltd's unique hardware system.
Casement Windows:
GALAXY offers casement window technology in fixed and operating unit styles. Many of our products are mulled combinations of fixed (casement picture window) and operating units.
Advanced multi-point locking systems are used to assure positive weather-tight seals. Heavy-duty (opening and closing) operators assure easy vent operation.
Awning Units:
GALAXY's awning units are manufactured using casement window technology, but providing for top hinging and easy swing-out operation. Awning units are often mulled with fixed units to address special needs or design applications.
Bay and Bow Units
GALAXY is especially noted for the splendid designs and workmanship of it's custom BAY and BOW units. Seat and headboards are fashioned from select Red Oak to add to the elegance of the unit. Customer selected window panel choices are incorporated to enhance appearance of the home into which it will be installed. Operating vents may be either casement or double hung units, and are often accented by fashionable colonial or diamond grids.
Basement Hopper Units:
To round out our selection of quality product offerings, GALAXY manufactures a bottom hinged, in-swinging basement hopper unit suitable for both new construction and replacement applications.
Special Shapes:
Many newer home styles feature triangular or trapezoid windows. Eyebrow and round top units are also popular. There is a lesser demand for hexagon style fixed units, but all of these special unit styles can be custom made at GALAXY.
NFRC Certification:
The National Fenestration Rating Council is the only officially recognized agency that monitors thermal performance of windows, doors and skylights. The NFRC establishes testing methods, monitors test laboratories, provides surveillance of product conformance, and supervises an energy performance rating and labeling program. The values rated and published reflect a whole product performance value, not just a theoretical glass value or other value, which may be inaccurately used to describe a total product value.
GALAXY participates in the NFRC CERTIFICATION PROGRAM, and the values for all units tested and rated are published in that organization's CERTIFIED PRODUCT DIRECTORY. This directory is also displayed on NFRC's web-site, www.nfrc.org.
Every GALAXY® unit style listed in the NFRC DIRECTORY is routinely available, unlike many of the variations tested and rated by other manufacturers.
A word of caution, we recommend that a perspective window buyer check this directory for proven whole window thermal values when selecting a product. Wildly superior sounding R-Value claims often reflect a theoretical or a "center of glass (only)" value, and offer no indication of the real value of the window product. In nautical terms, it doesn't take much of a leak to sink the ship!
