Voted as the most innovative manufacturing plant in 2001 by Window and Door Magazine, the 350,000 sq. ft. facility is equipped with latest technology. 1940’s

  • A Calgary home builder, Bernard “Tiny” Gienow has a desire to have quality windows in the homes he builds. His pursuit leads to the creation of Gienow Sash and Door Co. Limited, in 1947.

  • The company office is located in Mr. Gienow’s home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

1950’s

  • In 1954, seven city lots are purchased to construct the offices of Gienow Sash and Door in North East Calgary.

  • Gienow acquires Humphrey Window Franchise in 1955, which helps to establish Gienow as a household name in Calgary.

  • Bernard Gienow is honored as the president of the Calgary Home Builders Association.

1960’s

  • Ervin Wagner, Mr. Gienow’s nephew, becomes the president of Gienow in 1960.

  • An association is launched in 1961 with the industrial trailer sector, enabling Gienow Windows and doors to be indirectly shipped worldwide.

1970’s

  • Gienow Sash and Door becomes a division of Redpath Industries Ltd. in 1972 and is given the new name of Gienow Ltd.

  • Gienow Ltd. constructs a 50,000 square foot plant and head office in Northeast Calgary.

  • In 1974, Gienow expands its service through a new Sales and Distribution Center located in Edmonton, Alberta.

  • Gienow installs its first mainframe computer in 1974. The 20-megabyte computer requires its own refrigerated room to accommodate the washer-sized disk drive.

  • Continue growth leads to a 26,000 square foot expansion of the manufacturing
    facility in 1975. Plant and office space now totals 76,000 square feet.

1980’s

  • Assembly of wood casement windows begins in 1980. 

  • In 1983, a group of Calgary businessmen see an opportunity and purchase Gienow Ltd. and rename the company Gienow Building Products Ltd. establishing our current Management team. Gienow Building Products employs 37 people.

  • Gienow adopts the Japanese philosophy of just-in-time manufacturing in 1985 and becomes the industry leader in on-time performance.

  • In 1988, the Calgary Home Builders Association names Gienow its Supplier of the year.

  • Gienow Building Products Ltd. becomes a direct international competitor in 1989, reaching a dozen countries including the USA, Japan, China, Russia, Chile and South Korea.

1990’s

  • In 1990, the Greater Edmonton Home Builders Association awards Gienow its first of 3 consecutive Supplier of the Year awards. A fourth award is added in 1999.

  • In 1992, Gienow expands its facility again, making a total of 120,000 square feet in a single building. The added space allowed for Gienow to install a state of the art wood molder and a truly unique vertical dryer.

  • Gienow begins the manufacturing of vinyl windows in 1993.

  • Gienow expands again, and adds a second manufacturing facility to house the industrial window and door product lines in 1993.

  • In 1996, Gienow reaches westward to and opens a Sales and Distribution Center in Kelowna, British Columbia.

  • Gienow becomes the first Canadian Company to incorporate InterceptTM insulating glass technology on sealed units in 1995. A third building is added to house the new sealed unit manufacturing line.

  • Gienow expands further into British Columbia, and opens a Sales and Distribution Center in Prince George, British Columbia in 1996.

  • In 1997, Gienow celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

  • Continued expansion creates the need for Gienow to add a fourth manufacturing facility to house steel door manufacturing in 1998.

  • On September 17, 1998 Gienow manufactures its one millionth InterceptTM sealed unit.

  • In 1999, Gienow moves into its current home in South East Calgary. The 350,000 square foot facility features state of the art technology. Alberta Premier Ralph Klein officially opens the facility at a Grand Opening ceremony.

  • In 1999, Award Windows of Edmonton, Alberta becomes a subsidiary of Gienow Building Products.

  • The Calgary Home Builders Association names Gienow Supplier of the Year 4 times in the 1990’s.

2000’s

  • Gienow opens a Sales and Distribution Center in Langley, British Columbia to service the Greater Vancouver area in 2001.

  • In 2001, Gienow creates a second subsidiary company, Architectural Windows and doors, Ltd. to focus on aluminum and high rise window manufacturing.

  • In 2001, Window and Door Magazine names Gienow the most innovative manufacturing plant in North America.

  • In 2002, Gienow is honored at the Canadian Information Productivity Awards for its Integrated Manufacturing System. Gienow receives the Best of Show Solution Award, the uppermost recognition in Canada in the field of information management.

  • Gienow receives its fifth supplier of the Year award from the Greater Edmonton Home Builders Association.

  • In 2003, the current management team of Gienow celebrates its 20th anniversary. 18 of the 37 original employees from 1983 are still employed by Gienow. Total number of employees now exceeds 800.
