"Manufacturing Quality Millwork Since 1866"

The story of Steves " Sons is a tribute to pioneering spirit, family leadership, adaptability and a firm commitment to quality. Edward Steves first established his pioneer lumber business in San Antonio, a small Mexican-style adobe village. Steves recognized the need for lumber as a building material for this burgeoning community outpost on the edge of a growing frontier. As early as 1871, Steves brought in cypress from Louisiana and long-leaf pine from Florida. By 1879, Steves stocked an average of 3,000,000 board feet of lumber and covered a market area extending through western Texas and northern Mexico.

As a San Antonio newspaper noted, "We can perhaps say with safety that there is not a habitation in southwest Texas not Northern Mexico, which can be safely reached by rail or wagon, that has not got one or more planks about it from the yards of Steves " Sons." In 1904, when large Texas lumber interests began to stock sash " doors from Mississippi River Mills, the Steves decided to set up a plant to manufacture millwork in San Antonio. By 1912, the new mill was so successful it was established as a new entity, Steves Sash " Door, seperate from the lumberyard.

By 1916, Steves Sash " Door Company was the largest millwork plant in the Southwest. World War I and World War II created new demands with the thousands of soldiers pouring into San Antonio fueling a boom in housing construction. Steves also manufactured propellers for the Army Air Corps and produced joinery work for the "Victory" and "Liberty" ships of the Merchant Marine... work that earned the Maritime Commision's "M" Award for Excellence on five occasions. It was one of the first five-star pennants awarded.

Steves " Sons has continued to prosper and expand, today boasting state-of-art wood door production facilities in San Antonio, Texas; Lebanon, Tennessee; and Richmond, Virginia. However proud of one's pioneer heritage, a company must be forward thinking... Always planning for the future. What then can we expect of Steves " Sons as it moves forward? Look for continued dedication to quality, both in product and in service.

Look for a continuance of Steves family management and leadership. Expect further expansion of services to existing markets and continued exploration of new markets.

Steves " Sons Inc. was founded in 1866 as Ed. Steves " Sons Lumber Yard. Edward Steves arrived in Galveston from Germany in 1850. He was married and was blessed with three sons; Edward Jr., Albert, and Ernest.

Edward Steves moved to the pioneer town of San Antonio, intent upon supporting his new family. He purchased a wheat thrasher in 1860, and quickly began to turn a profit renting the machine to local farmers. Using proceeds from the wheat thrashing machine rental, Edward Steves entered the lumber business to supply the rapidly growing city with spruce and pine from the north and east.
