President Barack Obama has wisely raised tax credits for energy efficient home improvements from 10% to 30%. The government is encouraging homeowners to be green by giving them Tax incentives to update their home to function efficiently. Homeowners will be eligible for a tax credit for up to $1500 for the next two years if they use Energy Star products in their home.
The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have developed an ENERGY STAR® designation for products meeting certain energy performance criteria.
Since energy efficient performance of windows, doors, and skylights varies by climate, product recommendations are given for four U.S. climate zones. For making comparisons among ENERGY STAR® products, use the NFRC label or the NFRC Certified Products Directory. The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is a nonprofit, public/private organization created by the window, door, and skylight industry. It is composed of manufacturers, suppliers, builders, architects and designers, specifiers, code officials, utilities, and government agencies. The NFRC has developed a window energy rating system based on whole product performance.
The NFRC label provides the only reliable way to determine the window energy properties and to compare products. The NFRC label appears on all products certified to the NFRC standards and on all window, door, and skylight products which are part of the ENERGY STAR® program. At this time, NFRC labels on window units give ratings for U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), Visible Light Transmittance (VT), and Air Leakage (AL). Soon labels will include a Condensation Resistance (CR) rating.
