Weather Shield embraces its role as a friend of the environment. Constructing new facilities, such as a manufacturing plant, can present some rather complicated environmental issues. Considerable planning and control measures are required to minimize the effects of runoff and air emissions from a site, both during and after construction. Because more than one acre of wetlands were to be impacted during construction, Weather Shield underwent both "on-site" and "off-site" wetland compensatory mitigation that mandates the creation of new wetlands to replace those that are lost. There are many independent industry organizations that provide various guidelines for green building. Each use different ratings or systems, but ultimately have the same goal in mind. For more information about any of these organizations, click on the links below. Promoting a whole-building approach to sustainability, LEED recognizes performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Weather Shield windows and doors can contribute toward points earned for a project through the energy efficiency, materials section and indoor environmental air quality depending on the product and style selected. For example, ProShield products under LEED MR-4-Recycled Content is eligible for 2 points as a result of being SCS Certified. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a home's windows consume up to 3.8 quadrillion BTUs of energy annually in the form of heating and air conditioning expenses. At a cost of more than $30 billion to homeowners, it pays to compare glazing options when choosing windows for your home. *Savings are relative to a double-pane clear glass window. Based on a national average size house (2,300 sq. ft, 2-story) with 18% window to floor area ratio, 30% shade usage, gas heat and electric air conditioning. Long term national average energy prices of $1 per therm for natural gas and $0.09 per kWh electric. Actual savings will vary by climate region, house type, homeowner operational characteristics, and local energy prices.
